In Book of Job 33:14–18, Elihu says something we easily overlook:
“For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.
In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,
That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.
He keepeth back his soul from the pit…”
Notice verse 15.
“In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men…”
There is something about the night.
When the striving stops.
When the schedule is over.
When the phone is quiet.
When you are no longer performing.
It is there, in the stillness, that God sometimes speaks most clearly.
Elihu is telling Job, “Do you not understand? The Lord can even use a dream to redirect a man before he destroys himself.” God is not limited to sermons, prophets, or dramatic miracles. He can reach into the most private space of your life and whisper truth when you are finally still enough to hear it.
And why does He do this?
“To withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.”
That phrase is searching. We assume God exists to advance our plans. Yet here we are told He may step in specifically to interrupt them. Not to harm us, but to rescue us. Pride blinds. Ambition pushes. Self will insists. And if God did not intervene, we would march confidently toward the pit.
Think of the wise men in Gospel of Matthew 2:12. After worshiping Christ, they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod. A quiet message in the night preserved them from danger. No spectacle. No public scene. Just divine mercy delivered while they slept.
God still works that way.
Sometimes it is a literal dream. Sometimes it is a deep unrest in your spirit. Sometimes it is Scripture echoing in your mind at two in the morning. However He chooses, the purpose is the same: to keep back your soul from the pit.
If the Lord unsettles you, do not ignore it.
If He redirects you, do not resist it.
If He speaks in the night, do not dismiss it.
It may be the kindness of God saving you from yourself.
