Revelation 14:17, 18
And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.
And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth for her grapes are fully ripe.
The picture changes here.
In the earlier scene, the harvest was grain. Here, it is grapes. That takes us back to the parable of the wheat and tares in Matthew 13. There comes a moment when the separation is no longer delayed. The Lord says the time has come, and the harvest is gathered.
But this second picture feels heavier. Grain can speak of harvest in a broad sense. Grapes here speak of judgment pressing down on a world that has fully ripened in rebellion. That is the sobering phrase in the text: her grapes are fully ripe.
Do not miss that. God does not judge hastily. He is patient. He warns. He calls. He reaches. But there comes a point when sin has matured, when rebellion has ripened, when the clusters are full. And when that point comes, judgment is no longer postponed.
That is true on the world stage in Revelation, but there is also a personal warning here for us. In our own tribulations, bitterness can grow quietly. Unforgiveness can hang on the vine longer than it should. Cynicism can settle into the soul if it is not brought to the Lord. What starts small does not stay small. It ripens.
I have seen that happen. A person gets hurt, then offended, then hard. Before long, the hurt is no longer just something they experienced. It becomes part of who they are. That is why Scripture tells us not to let a root of bitterness spring up. Deal with it early. Bring it to Jesus while your heart is still soft.
This passage is a warning not to play games with sin. Do not admire it. Do not excuse it. Do not nurse it. Bring it into the light while there is still tenderness in your heart. Because in the Bible, ripeness is not always a good thing. Sometimes it means the season of mercy is being refused, and the hour of reckoning is near.
So stay tender, saints. Forgive quickly. Repent early. Keep short accounts with God. The Lord is patient, but none of us should presume upon that patience.
