Stop, Abraham – Genesis 22:10-12

Genesis 22:10-12

And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

This is the moment everything has been building toward.

Abraham lifts the knife.

He is not pretending. He is not holding back. In his heart, Isaac is already as good as gone. The obedience is complete before the blade ever falls.

And then… “Abraham, Abraham.”

The voice stops him.

The angel of the Lord calls out, and that is not just any angel. This is the Lord Himself. This is Jesus, speaking from heaven into this moment, stopping the sacrifice that He Himself would one day fulfill.

Think about that.

The One who would go to the cross is the One who says, “Stop.”

Abraham is spared from finishing what he started. The Father will not be spared.

“Lay not thine hand upon the lad.”

In other words, “You have gone far enough.”

And then the reason is given: “for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.”

God was not learning something He did not know. Abraham was.

This moment revealed the depth of Abraham’s love and trust. Not in theory. Not in words. But in action.

He did not withhold his son.

And that is where this lands heavy.

Because in just a few verses, we will see that God does provide a substitute for Isaac. But when it comes to His own Son, there will be no voice from heaven saying, “Stop.”

No interruption. No last-minute substitute.

The Father will not hold back.

Romans 8:32 says He “spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all.”

So here in Genesis 22, Abraham is stopped, but the greater story is already in motion. The day would come when the knife would not be stayed, when the sacrifice would go all the way.

And that makes this moment even more powerful.

Because Abraham shows his love by being willing to give his son.

God shows His love by actually giving His Son.

And that is the difference.
