The Day Your Old Self Died – Galatians 5:24

Galatians 5:24

And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

This may be the greatest news ever whispered into a human soul.

You do not have to kill your flesh.

It has already been executed.

There are many ways a man could attempt to destroy himself. But crucifixion is not one of them. No one crucifies himself. If you nail one hand, who drives the spike through the other?

Crucifixion requires another.

And Another stepped in.

Romans 6:6

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

When Jesus was lifted onto that Cross, your old man was lifted there with Him. The version of you that was enslaved to lust, chained to anger, mastered by fear, addicted to approval – that man was sentenced and carried out to execution.

And God calls it finished.

Paul does not say, “You should crucify the flesh.” He says those who belong to Christ have crucified it. Past tense. Completed action. Historical event.

Romans 6:11

Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Reckon means count it true. Agree with heaven’s verdict.

Imagine waking up to find that the prison you thought you were trapped in had been legally demolished overnight. The bars may still be standing. The door may look closed. But the paperwork has already been signed. The sentence has already been served.

The flesh still shouts. It still tempts. It still tries to intimidate. But it has lost its authority. It is a dethroned ruler pacing an empty throne room.

Christianity does not begin with advice. It begins with an announcement. Not “Do better.” Not “Try harder.” But “It is finished.” If the gospel were merely moral reform, Paul would command self execution. Instead, he declares a completed crucifixion in Christ.

This is not self improvement.

This is substitution.

This is union.

This is resurrection life standing where death once ruled.

The best news ever revealed is this: the worst part of you already died, and the life of Christ now lives in you.

Freedom is not ahead of you.

It is behind you at the Cross – waiting to be believed.
