Ephesians 2:1
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.
The phrase “hath he quickened” is supplied for clarity. The original reading is stark and sobering:
“And you were dead in trespasses and sins.”
Not sick.
Not struggling.
Not spiritually challenged.
Dead.
God’s work in us is crucial because of the sin that worked against us. Before Christ intervened, we were not drowning swimmers waving for help. We were lifeless bodies at the bottom of the sea.
The Bible speaks of death in three ways.
First, there is physical death. That moment when the spirit separates from the body. Though medicine may debate definitions, Scripture is clear. When the spirit departs, life departs. The body remains, but the person is gone.
Second, there is spiritual death. This is what Paul addresses here. A person can breathe, think, work, laugh, and yet be utterly unresponsive to God. No pulse toward heaven. No hunger for holiness. No awareness of eternity.
It is like a radio that has power but no signal. The device is intact. The circuitry is functional. But it receives nothing because it is not tuned to the right frequency. Spiritually dead people are not necessarily immoral monsters. They are simply disconnected from the life of God.
Third, there is eternal death.
2 Thessalonians 1:9
Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.
Eternal death is final separation from God’s presence. Physical death is separation of spirit from body. Spiritual death is separation of man from God. Eternal death is that separation made permanent.
But here is the glory of the gospel.
If you are in Christ, this verse no longer describes you.
You were dead. Past tense.
The miracle of salvation is not self-improvement. It is resurrection.
A corpse cannot reform itself. A corpse cannot educate itself. A corpse cannot promise to do better next time. It must be acted upon. Life must come from outside of it.
That is exactly what God has done.
John 5:24
He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Passed from death unto life.
Not gradually improved. Not partially repaired. Passed.
Imagine walking through a cemetery at dusk. Every stone marks a story ended. Every name represents a life that cannot respond. Then suddenly, one grave bursts open. Breath fills lungs. Eyes open. A heartbeat begins.
That is salvation.
Christianity does not flatter humanity. It diagnoses humanity. We are not basically good people needing inspiration. We are spiritually dead people needing resurrection. Only a risen Savior can raise the dead. The empty tomb of Christ is not a religious symbol. It is the proof that the One who conquered death physically can conquer death spiritually.
And if He can raise a crucified Messiah from a sealed grave, He can raise a sinner from spiritual death.
You were dead.
Now you are alive.
Live like it.
