Ephesians 3:2–6
If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to youward:
How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery;
…that the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel.
In Scripture, a mystery is not a riddle but a truth once concealed and now unveiled at the proper time. Paul says what former ages could not fully see is now revealed by the Spirit: Jew and Gentile standing together as heirs in Christ. One body. One promise. One gospel.
That revelation sits inside a much bigger story. As you move through Scripture, you see God allowing every human theory of success to play out. It is as if the Lord says, “You think this will fix you? Let us walk through it.”
The Dispensation of Innocence
In the beginning, there was no broken home, no corrupt culture, no trauma to blame. Adam and Eve lived in a flawless environment. Yet even in perfection, the human heart chose rebellion.
The problem was never surroundings. It was sin within.
The Dispensation of Conscience
After the fall, mankind lived guided by inner awareness. “Follow your heart,” we might say today. But Genesis tells us the earth filled with violence until judgment came through the flood.
Conscience alone could not restrain corruption.
The Dispensation of Government
Following the flood, God established human government. Structure. Accountability. Justice. Yet man quickly gathered at Babel, not to honor God but to exalt himself.
Even organized authority could not cure pride.
The Dispensation of Promise
God called Abraham and gave him staggering promises. Land. Descendants. Blessing. Yet his offspring ended up enslaved in Egypt.
A vision without dependence still ends in bondage.
The Dispensation of the Law
At Sinai, God gave commandments that were holy and good. Clear standards. Defined boundaries. Yet history proves what Paul later explains: the law exposes sin but cannot empower obedience.
Rules reveal the problem. They do not remove it.
The Dispensation of Grace
This is the age Paul describes in Ephesians 3. The mystery now revealed is that salvation comes not through system, structure, or self effort, but through Christ. Jew and Gentile alike are made fellow heirs by faith.
Grace is not God tweaking the system. Grace is God stepping in Himself. He died. He rose. He saves. This dispensation declares that innocence, conscience, government, promise, and law cannot rescue the human heart.
Only Christ can.
The Dispensation of the Tribulation
Many say they would believe if only they could see unmistakable signs. Revelation describes a coming season when judgments shake the earth and heaven speaks loudly.
Yet even then, many will harden their hearts. Sight does not guarantee surrender.
The Dispensation of Righteousness
Christ will reign. Peace will cover the earth. Creation itself will flourish. And still, at the end of that thousand year reign, some will rebel.
A perfect environment cannot create a perfect heart.
When you see this progression, the fog clears. God is not inconsistent. He is patient. Through every age, He demonstrates the same truth: man cannot save himself.
The mystery revealed in this present age is that grace is the answer. Not another theory. Not another reform. Not another experiment.
Grace is God giving us His Son and making us fellow heirs in Him.
