Paul now moves from actions to atmosphere.
Sin does not only live in the body. It lives in the tongue.
Ephesians 5:4 (a)
Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient…
These words are not random. They are connected to the sexual impurity of the previous verse. What fills the heart eventually spills into conversation. What once shocked now entertains. What once caused a blush now draws laughter.
Culture has not become more innocent.
It has become more numb.
There was a time when certain words would clear a room. Now they headline shows. Suggestive humor is baptized as wit. Crude speech is labeled authenticity. But Paul says it does not fit who you are.
It is not convenient. Not suitable. Not consistent with saints.
Speech reveals appetite.
If the heart feeds on impurity, the mouth will season conversation with it.
And slowly, almost invisibly, the soul adjusts. What once pricked the conscience now produces a chuckle. Desensitization is not loud. It is gradual.
It is like walking into a room with a faint odor. At first you notice it. Stay long enough and you no longer detect it at all.
That is what foolish talk does. It trains the soul to tolerate what God calls unclean.
Ephesians 5:4 (b)
but rather giving of thanks.
Paul does not simply say stop.
He says replace.
Instead of echoing the tone of the world, introduce a different sound. Gratitude.
When conversation drifts toward darkness, redirect it toward light. When joking becomes suggestive, pivot to praise. When innuendo fills the air, fill it instead with thanksgiving.
Gratitude is not shallow optimism. It is spiritual oxygen.
Try it. The next time a conversation tilts toward something corrupt, quietly shift it. “The Lord was faithful to me this week.” “You know what I am thankful for?” “God has been good.”
It may feel awkward at first.
But gratitude changes the climate.
It is like opening a window in a stale room. Fresh air rushes in. The atmosphere shifts.
Filthiness corrodes.
Thanksgiving cleanses.
The mouth that once spread decay can spread fragrance instead.
You are saints. Your speech should sound like it.
