Change does not begin with emotion.
It begins with a decision.
Ephesians 4:22
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man…
Put it off.
Like taking off a smoke soaked coat after standing too close to a fire. You do not negotiate with it. You remove it.
The old man is not reformed. He is discarded.
And why?
Ephesians 4:22–23
…which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.
Deceitful lusts.
There is no smoother liar than desire.
It whispers, “If you just had this… if you just indulged that… if you just stepped a little closer… you would finally be satisfied.”
But lust is like salt water. The more you drink, the thirstier you become.
It can even wear church clothes.
“I just want to help her.”
“I just want to pray with him.”
“I just want to be there.”
But beneath the spiritual language can lurk another agenda. Desire dressed as ministry. Fire disguised as warmth.
And fire behaves the same way every time. Feed it, and it grows. Ignore it, and it cools.
Paul does not say pray it away first.
He says put it off.
Then something else happens.
Be renewed in the spirit of your mind.
Renewal is not mystical fog drifting in. It is a shift in thinking. It is saying, “That path leads to destruction.” It is calling deceit what it is.
Romans 12 tells us transformation comes through a renewed mind. When the mind changes direction, the life follows.
Then comes the final step.
Ephesians 4:24
And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Put on the new man.
Like clothing yourself in a different identity.
If you wait to feel compassionate before acting compassionate, you will wait forever.
If you wait to feel holy before walking holy, you will never move.
But when you choose obedience, something mysterious happens. The behavior begins shaping the heart.
It is not pretending.
It is deciding.
You choose to forgive.
You choose to love.
You choose to speak cleanly.
You choose to walk differently.
And over time, the choice becomes the character.
The old man is taken off.
The mind is renewed.
The new man is put on.
Not deception.
Decision.
And the One you are putting on is Christ Himself.
