Faith and Love – Colossians 1:4

Colossians 1:4 (a)

Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus…

Paul identifies the first mark of a mature church: faith.

Not activity.
Not reputation.
Faith.

Faith in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews tells us that without faith it is impossible to please God. A church can gather faithfully, organize efficiently, and speak eloquently, but if it does not truly believe God is able and willing to move, it will never experience renewal or blessing.

Faith expects God to act.

Faith prays believing.
Faith serves trusting.
Faith gives confidently.

A fellowship that does not expect God to work should not be surprised when little happens.

The Colossians were known for faith.

And Paul adds the second mark.

Colossians 1:4 (b)

…and of the love which ye have to all the saints.

The second mark of a strong church is love.

Jesus said the world would recognize His disciples by their love. Not by their precision. Not by their volume. By their love.

Notice Paul says love for all the saints.

Not just the agreeable ones.
Not just the similar ones.
All.

Faith in Christ.
Love for His people.

If faith is the root, love is the fruit.

When both are present, a church is healthy.

Believe deeply.

Love broadly.

That is the mark of maturity.
