Do Not Let Them Judge You – Colossians 2:16

Colossians 2:16

Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days.

Because Christ has forgiven you.
Because He has triumphed.
Because you are complete in Him.

Therefore.

Let no one judge you.

The Colossians were being told that if they really wanted to be spiritual, they needed to add something. Observe certain days. Keep certain feasts. Avoid certain foods. Follow certain rituals.

It sounded serious. Disciplined. Devout.

But it was bondage dressed up as holiness.

Legalism always whispers the same thing:
“Christ is good… but not enough.”

It shifts the focus from what Christ has done to what you must perform. It measures spirituality by calendars and menus instead of by faith and love.

Now, discipline has its place. Self control matters. Wisdom in living matters. But when those things become the basis of righteousness, the joy of grace evaporates.

The cross says you are accepted.
Legalism says you must qualify.

The cross says finished.
Legalism says almost.

Paul does not tell them to argue. He does not tell them to defend themselves. He simply says, do not let them judge you.

Stand firm in grace.

If someone feels free to fast, let him fast. If someone celebrates a day, let her celebrate. But do not allow external observances to become the measuring stick of spiritual worth.

The Christian life is not about diet charts and date keeping.

It is about Christ.

When you understand that you are complete in Him, you stop striving to prove yourself through outward performance.

You rest.

And in that rest, you walk in freedom.
