Sleepless for Their Sake – 1 Thessalonians 3:10

Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face…

Paul wasn’t casually praying for these people.

He says “night and day.”

That tells you something.

There were probably nights when sleep wouldn’t come easy. Nights when the room was quiet but his mind wasn’t. Instead of staring at the ceiling or replaying the latest persecution, he prayed.

For people he had only known for a few weeks.

Three weeks in Thessalonica. That’s it. And yet his heart was tied to them like family. That’s what the gospel does. It links souls together fast and deep.

He wanted to see their faces again. Not send a letter. Not hear secondhand reports. See them. Sit with them. Teach them. Encourage them.

And why?

…and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?

He was proud of them. He rejoiced over them. He thanked God for them.

But he also knew something.

They weren’t finished.

Their faith was real, but it was still young. Strong in places. Thin in others. That’s not criticism. That’s growth.

A good pastor doesn’t pretend everything is complete just because progress is happening. He rejoices in what God has done and still longs to strengthen what’s fragile.

“Perfect” here doesn’t mean flawless. It means to supply what’s missing. To shore up weak spots. To help something mature.

Like finishing the framing on a house that’s already standing. It’s there. It’s solid. But it still needs reinforcement before the storms come.

Paul prayed like that.

Not for comfort.
Not for easier travel.
But for their faith to be strengthened.

There’s something beautiful about a man lying awake, whispering prayers for believers miles away.

That’s love.

And it reminds us that growth never really stops. No matter how well we’re doing, there’s always something the Lord wants to deepen, steady, and strengthen.
