The Word That Works – 1 Thessalonians 2:13

1 Thessalonians 2:13

For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

Paul is not thanking them for being polite listeners.

He is thanking God because they understood what they were hearing.

They did not treat the message as Paul’s opinion.
They did not file it away as interesting philosophy.
They did not evaluate it as one more religious voice in a crowded world.

They received it as it is in truth — the Word of God.

That changes everything.

When the Word is treated as the word of men, it is optional.
When it is received as the Word of God, it becomes authority.

And notice what Paul says it does.

It “effectually worketh” in those who believe.

The Word is not static ink on paper.
It is active. It works. It accomplishes something.

The written Word and the living Word are inseparably connected.

Jesus said, “I am the Truth.”
Scripture says, “Thy word is truth.”

Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world.”
The psalmist says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet.”

Jesus said, “I am the Bread of life.”
And He answered the tempter, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

Truth.
Light.
Bread.

If you starve a body, it weakens.
If you starve the soul, it drifts.

People sometimes wonder why we open the Scriptures again and again. Why study? Why gather? Why build retreats around the Word?

Because this is not commentary about God.
This is the revelation of God.

And when a believer receives it as such, it begins to work from the inside out.

It convicts.
It comforts.
It clarifies.
It strengthens.

Not because of the speaker.
Not because of eloquence.
But because it is the Word of God.

And it still works.
