1 Thessalonians 5:3–6
For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
Listen to the contrast.
“They” will say, “Peace and safety.”
Everything’s fine.
Nothing to worry about.
We’ve got this under control.
And right in the middle of that confidence—sudden destruction.
Paul compares it to labor pains. When they begin, they do not ask permission. They do not send a warning email. They arrive, and once they start, they do not reverse.
That is the world’s condition. Confident. Unaware. Certain it has secured its own future.
But then Paul turns.
“But ye, brethren…”
That’s us.
“You are not in darkness.”
Believers are not guessing about the direction of history. We are not stumbling around in spiritual midnight. We know the trajectory. We know the King is coming.
That day should not overtake you like a thief.
Why?
Because thieves only surprise people who are asleep.
“Ye are all the children of light.”
That’s identity.
Light reveals. Light exposes. Light clarifies. When you walk in light, you are not startled by shapes in the dark because you can see what’s coming.
So Paul says, “Let us not sleep.”
He’s not talking about physical rest.
He’s talking about spiritual dullness.
You can be busy and still asleep. You can be active and still unaware. You can attend church and still drift.
“Watch and be sober.”
Stay clear-headed. Stay alert. Stay grounded in truth.
The world may grow more unstable. The seasons before the Lord’s coming will not grow softer. They will grow sharper. More deceptive. More intense.
That should not frighten you.
It should focus you.
Darkness deepens before dawn. But dawn still comes.
Believers do not panic when night falls.
We know what time it is.
And while others chant “peace and safety” without understanding the hour, we live differently. Not afraid. Not reckless.
Awake.
Watching.
Ready.
