2 Thessalonians 2:9
Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
Paul is not vague here.
The coming of the Wicked will be supernatural.
Real power.
Real manifestations.
Real phenomena.
But sourced in Satan.
“Signs and lying wonders” does not mean fake tricks in the cheap sense. It means wonders that point to a lie. Miracles that validate deception. Power that reinforces error.
The enemy has always understood something about us.
We are impressed by spectacle.
If it glows, shakes, moves, multiplies, or manifests dramatically, we instinctively lean in.
But Scripture is brutally honest about this.
The children of Israel saw the Red Sea open. They watched the waters collapse over Pharaoh’s army. They stood at Sinai while the mountain trembled and the voice of God thundered. They ate manna that appeared with the morning dew. They saw the earth open and swallow rebellion.
No generation witnessed more visible miracles.
Yet Hebrews says plainly:
So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
— Hebrews 3:19
Miracles did not produce faith.
They produced moments of awe.
And then complaint.
Centuries later, the same pattern continued. After being fed miraculously, the people still asked:
They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
— John 6:30
Always another sign.
Always one more wonder.
Signs create appetite.
The Word creates faith.
Paul warns that in the last days there will be an explosion of supernatural displays tied to deception. And Jesus Himself said:
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
— Mark 16:17
Notice the order.
Signs follow believers.
But when believers start following signs, the order is reversed.
That is where danger creeps in.
The coming Antichrist will not persuade the world merely with policy. He will persuade with power. With manifestations that feel divine. With events that look unmistakably spiritual.
And many will equate power with truth.
That has always been the mistake.
Faith does not come from spectacle. It comes from hearing.
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
— Romans 10:17
The Word anchors you when the lights are flashing.
The Word steadies you when something extraordinary is happening.
The Word keeps you from mistaking electricity for eternity.
As we approach the final days, fascination with the supernatural will increase. Within the world. Within religious circles. Even within the church.
The question will not be, “Is this powerful?”
The question will be, “Is this true?”
Because Satan can produce power.
Only God produces truth.
And when the Wicked comes with power and signs and lying wonders, those who are grounded in the Word will not be dazzled.
They will be discerning.
