A Father and a Son — 2 Timothy 1:2

2 Timothy 1:2

To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Paul is not writing to a church here. He is writing to a man he loved deeply.

To Timothy, my dearly beloved son.

Years earlier, during Paul’s first missionary journey through Lystra, Timothy came to faith in Christ. By the time Paul returned on his second journey, the young man had grown in the Lord and had a good reputation among the believers.

So Paul did something important.

He invited Timothy to travel with him.

Timothy did not learn ministry in a classroom. He learned it walking dusty roads beside Paul, watching how the gospel was preached and how difficulties were handled.

That reminds us of something important. The work of God always moves forward when older believers bring younger ones along on the journey.

Sometimes that feels risky.

Younger Christians occasionally make mistakes. They say the wrong thing. They try things that do not work. But Solomon gave wise perspective.

Proverbs 14:4

Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.

An empty stable stays neat and quiet. But nothing grows there.

When oxen enter the stable, things get messy, but the fields get plowed and the harvest comes. The same is true in ministry. When younger believers are welcomed into the work, there may be a few bumps along the way, but there is also fresh life and strength.

Paul saw that in Timothy.

Then he gives the greeting he often used.

Grace, mercy, and peace.

Grace was the common Greek greeting. Peace reflected the Hebrew blessing. But Paul adds one more word for Timothy.

Mercy.

Timothy was a young leader facing pressure and responsibility. Paul knew he would need mercy when he felt weak or unsure.

Every servant of God needs that same mercy.

Because the work of God is not carried forward by perfect people.

It moves forward when one generation reaches back and brings the next along.
