2 Timothy 1:13–15
Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.
This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.
Paul is nearing the end of his life when he writes these words.
He has poured decades into preaching the gospel, planting churches, and teaching believers. Yet now he tells Timothy something painful. Many who once stood with him have walked away.
That had to sting.
Imagine giving years of your life to people, teaching them the Scriptures, praying with them, traveling with them, and then watching some of them quietly distance themselves when things get difficult. Paul does not pretend it did not happen. He names two men who turned away from him.
Phygellus.
Hermogenes.
Paul is not being bitter. He is being clear. Timothy needed to understand that false teaching and spiritual compromise do not always arrive loudly. Sometimes they slip in quietly, and people who once seemed steady drift away from the truth.
That is why Paul says something very simple.
Hold fast.
Hold tightly to the sound words you have received. Guard them. Protect them. Do not loosen your grip when the pressure rises.
But notice how Paul says Timothy is to do this. Not with harshness. Not with pride. He says to hold the truth in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
Truth without love becomes hard. Love without truth becomes weak. Paul says both must stay together.
It is a little like a lighthouse standing on a rocky shoreline. The storms may crash against the rocks. Ships may drift and sailors may lose their bearings. But the lighthouse does not move. It keeps shining the same steady beam night after night so that those who want safe passage know where the shore truly lies.
That is the calling Paul gives Timothy.
Hold fast to the truth.
Guard what God has entrusted to you.
Let the Holy Spirit keep your heart steady.
Because in every generation the church needs people who will stand like that lighthouse, shining the same light when the fog begins to roll in.
