2 Timothy 2:11
It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:
Paul begins with a phrase that catches my attention. “It is a faithful saying.” I like that. It means this is something solid, something you can lean on when life gets confusing.
Then comes the statement itself.
If we die with Him, we will live with Him.
That sounds backward to the way most of us think. Everything in us wants to preserve ourselves. We protect our reputation. We defend our rights. We hold tightly to our plans and preferences because we assume that’s where life is found.
But Jesus taught something very different.
He said the path to real life runs straight through the cross. Not the hardships life throws at us, but the moments we choose to lay something down. Pride. Control. The need to win every argument. The need to always be right.
Taking up the cross is a choice.
It might mean forgiving someone when part of you would rather keep the score. It might mean stepping aside so another person can grow. It might mean letting go of something you wanted so that someone else can be strengthened.
And here is the strange thing Paul discovered.
When we stop gripping life so tightly, life actually begins to breathe again.
Think about someone who has been holding their breath under water. The moment they break the surface and finally let the air rush in, everything changes. Strength returns. Clarity returns. Life returns.
Something similar happens in the soul.
The more we release ourselves to Christ, the more His life begins to move through us. And suddenly we realize something that seemed impossible before.
The life we tried so hard to protect was never as full as the life He gives.
