Noise That Leads Nowhere — 2 Timothy 2:16

2 Timothy 2:16

But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Paul gives Timothy a very practical warning.

“Shun profane and vain babblings.”

In other words, learn when to walk away from empty talk. Not every conversation is worth entering. Not every argument deserves your attention.

Think about that for a moment.

Some discussions do not move people toward truth at all. They just keep circling the same ground, getting louder and sharper until everyone walks away more irritated than when they started.

Paul says those kinds of conversations do not stay neutral. They grow. They spread. And before long they produce something unhealthy.

More ungodliness.

You see, words shape direction. When talk drifts away from truth and wisdom, it slowly pulls hearts in the same direction.

Honestly, the description sounds a lot like modern television talk shows. People gather around a table, voices rise, opinions fly back and forth, and everyone talks over each other. At the end of the hour there is plenty of noise, but very little clarity.

Paul says a wise person learns to step away from that kind of noise.

It is a little like standing beside a fire that someone keeps feeding with dry sticks. The more fuel that is thrown in, the larger the flames become. The only way to stop it from spreading is to stop feeding it.

The same principle works with empty arguments.

When we refuse to participate, the fire eventually dies down.

Timothy had a better task.

Stay close to the truth. Handle the Word carefully. Speak in ways that help people grow instead of stirring more confusion.

Because sometimes the wisest words a person can say are none at all.
