Run the Right Direction — 2 Timothy 2:22

2 Timothy 2:22

Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Paul gives Timothy a very practical instruction.

Flee.

Notice he does not say argue with temptation. He does not say analyze it, manage it, or see how close you can stand to it without getting burned.

He simply says run.

And he calls them “youthful lusts,” not because they only belong to the young, but because they tend to appear early and then follow people the rest of their lives. Age alone does not remove temptation. Plenty of people convince themselves that because they are older, wiser, or more experienced they can handle things that once tripped them up.

But temptation does not retire.

Paul’s wisdom is simple. When something pulls your heart in the wrong direction, create distance from it quickly.

Yet Paul does not stop with running away.

He says run toward something better.

Follow righteousness. Follow faith. Follow love. Follow peace. And do it with people who are sincerely calling on the Lord.

That part matters.

A person trying to stand alone against temptation usually ends up standing alone for only a short time. But when people walk alongside others who genuinely love the Lord, strength grows naturally.

It is a little like someone escaping a brush fire. The goal is not merely to get away from the flames. The goal is to run toward open ground where the fire cannot reach.

Paul is saying the same thing here.

Do not just flee the wrong path.

Run toward the right company.
