Tears That God Uses — 2 Timothy 1:4

2 Timothy 1:4

Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy.

Paul remembers the last time he saw Timothy.

There were tears.

The young man who had walked beside Paul on dusty roads, who had watched him preach and suffer and keep moving forward, now stood there weeping as they parted. The memory stayed with Paul, even as he sat in a Roman prison cell writing this final letter.

Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears.

Timothy was not the kind of man people usually imagine when they think of a strong leader. Scripture tells us he struggled with sickness. Paul once had to encourage him not to be afraid. And here we learn that he was emotional enough that he wept openly when saying goodbye.

If we were choosing a leader by outward impressions, Timothy might not have been the first pick.

But Paul saw something deeper.

Timothy loved the Lord.

His heart was soft toward God. His priority was the kingdom. And that mattered far more than personality or physical strength.

God has always worked that way.

He delights in using people the world might overlook. The ones who feel inadequate. The ones who know their own weakness. The ones who are not impressive in the eyes of others.

It is a little like a craftsman choosing tools from a workbench. A large hammer may look impressive, but sometimes the most delicate and careful work is done with a small, simple instrument.

God often chooses those quieter tools.

Because when He works through people who know their weakness, there is no confusion about where the power comes from. The strength clearly belongs to Him.

Timothy may have been young, timid, and sometimes overwhelmed.

Yet God used him greatly.

And the same Lord who worked through Timothy still delights in using ordinary people whose hearts are fully set on serving Him.
