2 Timothy 1:10–12 (a)
But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
For the which cause I also suffer these things…
Paul describes his calling with three words.
Preacher.
Apostle.
Teacher.
A preacher proclaims the gospel to those who do not yet know Christ. The message is simple and urgent. Jesus has conquered death. Life and immortality have been brought into the light through the gospel.
But Paul was also a teacher.
Teaching is different from preaching. Preaching announces the good news. Teaching builds believers so they understand the full scope of what God has revealed in Scripture.
And Paul focused on the biggest themes.
Redemption.
Justification.
Sanctification.
Life in the Spirit.
The nature of the Father.
The coming kingdom.
Interestingly, the subjects people often want to talk about most are marriage problems, emotional struggles, and financial questions. Those are real parts of life, but Paul addressed them briefly compared to the larger truths of the kingdom.
Why?
Because when the great truths are understood, the smaller questions begin to fall into place.
It is a little like learning how the sun works in the solar system. Once you understand the center, the movement of all the planets suddenly makes sense.
Jesus said the same thing.
Matthew 6:33
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
When the kingdom becomes the center of a person’s thinking, the rest of life begins to align around it.
That is why teaching the whole Word matters so much.
If someone only teaches favorite topics, they can circle the same ideas endlessly. But when the Scriptures are taught from beginning to end, God Himself sets the agenda. The subjects appear in their proper proportion and at the right time.
Paul knew that was the healthiest way to build believers.
Proclaim the gospel to the lost.
Teach the whole counsel of God to those who believe.
