A Clean Heart Sees Clearly — Titus 1:15

Titus 1:15

Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

Paul now moves from false teaching to the condition of the heart.

He says that to the pure, all things are pure. That statement can easily be misunderstood if it is pulled out of context. Paul is not saying that sin suddenly becomes acceptable or that morality disappears. What he is saying is that purity begins inside the heart.

A person whose heart has been cleansed by the Lord does not look at the world through a polluted lens. His mind is not constantly searching for something dirty, twisted, or corrupt. His conscience is clear, so his view of life remains clear.

But the opposite is also true.

When a person’s heart is defiled, everything begins to look defiled. Even ordinary things are interpreted through suspicion, cynicism, or impurity. The problem is not the object being observed. The problem is the condition of the observer.

Paul touched on a similar idea when writing to the believers in Rome.

Romans 16:19

For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.

There is wisdom in knowing what is good and true. But there is also wisdom in remaining innocent regarding evil.

Our culture tends to reverse that order. People pride themselves on being “in the know” about every crude joke, every dark trend, every twisted corner of entertainment. The more someone understands those things, the more sophisticated they are considered to be.

But Scripture points in a different direction.

The believer should know the Word deeply. Scripture should feel familiar, like an old path walked so often that every turn is known by heart. But when it comes to the vulgar humor and suggestive talk of the world, it is not a loss to be clueless.

In fact, it is a kind of protection.

A clean conscience gives a person the ability to see life clearly. When the heart stays close to the Lord and rooted in His Word, the mind remains steady and the soul remains free.
