Going Farther in the Faith — Titus 1:1

Titus 1:1

Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

Paul begins this letter by telling Titus who he is. Not a title meant to impress anyone. Just a clear description of his life.

A servant of God.
An apostle of Jesus Christ.

By the time he writes this, Paul has already walked a long and difficult road. Beatings, imprisonments, rejection, long miles of travel, and more than one night wondering whether he would survive the next day. Yet his heart is still fixed on the same mission.

After his first imprisonment in Rome, Paul most likely traveled to the island of Crete and left Titus there to establish order among the believers. Crete was not known for spiritual maturity. It was a rough place, a culture famous for sharp dealing and loose morals. Starting a healthy church there was not going to be easy.

But Paul explains why he serves the way he does.

“According to the faith of God’s elect.”

The phrase carries the idea of furthering the faith. Paul is saying, in effect, I want to see believers go farther. Not just come to faith, but grow in it. Deepen in it. Stand more firmly in it as the years pass.

I like that.

Some people treat faith like the finish line. Once they believe, the journey is over. But Paul saw faith more like a long road stretching ahead. The beginning matters, of course, but the direction matters just as much.

Think about a young tree planted in rocky soil. At first it bends easily in the wind. But year after year the roots push deeper into the ground. The trunk thickens. Storms come and the tree holds steady. That kind of steady strength is what Paul longed to see in believers.

Then he adds another phrase.

“The acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness.”

The idea is truth that produces godliness. Truth that changes the way a person lives.

Paul had no interest in truth as mere information. The world was already full of philosophers who loved long debates and clever arguments. Crete had plenty of talkers. But Paul knew that real truth always moves from the head into the life.

When truth takes hold of a heart, something begins to shift. Priorities change. Desires begin to settle into healthier directions. The way a person treats others starts to look different. It may happen quietly and gradually, but the transformation is real.

Paul’s ministry was aimed at that kind of growth. Not louder faith. Not flashier faith.

Just deeper faith that keeps moving forward.
