Hebrews 1:8 — The Throne of the Son

Hebrews 1:8

But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

The writer of Hebrews now quotes Psalm 45, and the statement could not be more direct.

Speaking of the Son, the Father says, “Thy throne, O God.”

Think about that for a moment.

God the Father calls the Son God.

There is no complicated argument here. No theological gymnastics. The verse simply says what it says. If God Himself refers to Jesus as God, the conclusion is unavoidable.

Jesus is God.

This is why the writer of Hebrews is so careful to draw the distinction between Christ and the angels. Angels are servants. Angels carry messages. Angels do the bidding of heaven.

But the Son sits on the throne.

And the throne He occupies is not temporary. It is not fragile. It is not subject to overthrow.

It is forever and ever.

Then the verse adds something beautiful. The scepter of His kingdom is a scepter of righteousness. In ancient times the scepter symbolized authority, rule, and judgment. Kings ruled by the power represented in that staff held in their hand.

But the rule of Christ is different from every human kingdom that has ever existed.

His rule is perfectly righteous.

Sometimes people wrestle with questions about how God will judge the world. They wonder about people who lived centuries ago, people who never heard the gospel, people in distant lands and different generations. How will God weigh every circumstance? How will He sort through the complexities of human history?

The honest answer is that we do not know every detail.

But we do know this.

When heaven looks upon the judgments of God, the response is not confusion or doubt. In Revelation we hear the voices around the throne declaring, “Righteous and true are thy judgments, Lord.”

In other words, heaven looks at the decisions of God and says, Perfect.

No mistake.

No compromise.

No injustice.

His justice is flawless, and His compassion is perfect. His kingdom is built on righteousness, and every decision that flows from His throne reflects that truth.

The One who reigns is not only powerful.

He is perfectly right in everything He does.
