Under the Stars — Hebrews 2:6

Hebrews 2:6

But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?

The writer of Hebrews now reaches back into another psalm, this time Psalm 8. Instead of naming David directly, he simply says that “one in a certain place testified.”

It is an interesting way to quote Scripture. The emphasis is not on the man who wrote it but on the truth that was spoken.

David likely wrote those words out in the open fields while tending his father’s sheep. Imagine the scene for a moment. A quiet hillside. The low sounds of sheep moving in the grass. A clear night sky stretching endlessly overhead.

With no city lights to dull the view, the heavens would have been overwhelming. Thousands of stars spread across the sky like scattered diamonds.

And standing there beneath it all, David asked a simple question.

“What is man, that thou art mindful of him?”

I like that question because it feels honest.

When you look up at the night sky long enough, you begin to feel very small. The vastness of the universe makes you realize just how tiny our lives really are in the grand scale of things.

David felt that.

He looked at the moon. He looked at the stars. He saw the work of God’s hands stretched across the heavens, and he wondered why the Creator of all that would pay attention to someone like him.

Think about that.

Why would the God who made galaxies care about a shepherd boy standing in a field?

Why would the One who hung the stars in place visit humanity at all?

Yet the gospel answers David’s question in the most unexpected way.

God did not merely notice humanity.

He came to us.

The phrase “the son of man, that thou visitest him” hints at something far greater than David could have imagined that night beneath the stars. The Creator Himself stepped into the world He made.

Jesus entered human history.

The One who formed the stars with His fingers walked dusty roads, spoke with ordinary people, and cared about individuals whose lives seemed insignificant to the rest of the world.

And that means the same truth still stands today.

The God who shaped the universe has not overlooked you.

The One who made the stars knows your name.
