An Appetite That Grows — Hebrews 5:14

Hebrews 5:14

But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Spiritual growth changes your appetite.

At the beginning of the Christian life, a person often needs things kept simple. The basic truths of the faith nourish the soul the way milk nourishes a child. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, it is necessary.

But God never intended His people to stay there.

Notice what the writer says. Strong meat belongs to those who are of full age. In other words, deeper truth becomes desirable as a believer grows.

But how does that growth happen?

By reason of use.

See that.

It is not simply hearing the Word. It is using it. Applying it. Letting the truth shape real decisions in everyday life. When a person begins living out what God shows them, their spiritual senses begin to sharpen.

They start recognizing what is healthy and what is harmful. What is true and what is empty. Discernment grows the same way muscles grow—through exercise.

Here’s the thing.

I have heard people leave a long Bible study and say something like, “That was a lot to take in tonight.” And sometimes it really is. Just like sitting down to a huge meal can leave you feeling completely full.

But appetite has a funny way of returning.

You may feel completely satisfied in the moment, thinking you could not possibly take in another bite. Yet before long, hunger comes back.

The same thing happens when a believer is growing in the Word.

At first the teaching might feel heavy. But if a person keeps walking with the Lord, keeps exercising what they are learning, something changes inside. The soul begins to crave more truth.

And before long the same person who once struggled through a study comes back again saying, “Go ahead—serve it up again. I’m ready.”

Because the more a believer grows, the more the Word stops feeling overwhelming.

And starts tasting good.
