Hebrews 7:24
But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.
There is a deep comfort in that verse.
Under the old system, priests kept changing because men kept dying. One would serve, then another would take his place, and then another after him. The office remained, but the man did not. So the whole system carried a built in interruption.
Jesus is entirely different.
Because He lives forever, His priesthood never passes to someone else. It is not handed down. It is not interrupted. It is not weakened by time. It is not subject to succession. His priesthood is unchangeable because He Himself remains unchanged.
That means what was temporary in the old order becomes permanent in Him.
It is like trying to lean on a row of walking sticks, each one good for a little while before it must be exchanged for another. That was the old pattern. But Jesus is not one more staff added to the row. He is the solid rock beneath your feet. He does not need replacing, and He does not wear out.
That matters because our confidence before God is tied directly to the Priest who represents us. If that priest is temporary, then everything feels temporary. But if that Priest lives forever, then your access to God rests on something steady and lasting.
Hebrews is showing that Jesus is not simply the latest priest in a long succession. He is the final Priest. There is no one after Him because there needs to be no one after Him.
In the Levitical order, there were many priests because no one could continue. In the order of Melchizedek, there is one Priest because one living Priest is enough.
That gives real rest to the soul. We are not being cared for by a revolving system. We are being held by a living Savior whose ministry will never end.
