Hebrews 12:14
Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.
The word translated follow can also be rendered pursue. It is a strong word. It means to chase after something with determination.
That fits perfectly with the race imagery running through this chapter. Every athlete pursues something. One runner chases a medal. Another pursues fame. Another runs for wealth or recognition. Their whole focus is fixed on the prize ahead of them.
But the Christian race is different.
The believer is called to pursue peace.
That does not mean peace at any cost or peace that ignores truth. It means living in a way that seeks harmony instead of hostility, reconciliation instead of rivalry. A follower of Christ should not be known as someone constantly stirring conflict, but as someone moving steadily toward peace with others.
And the verse pairs peace with something else: holiness.
Peace describes how we live with people.
Holiness describes how we live before God.
Both belong in the race. A believer who chases peace but ignores holiness drifts into compromise. A believer who talks about holiness but creates constant strife misses the heart of the Lord. The two run together.
Here’s the thing. When a runner fixes his eyes on the right prize, it changes how he runs. His choices, his training, his discipline—all of it lines up with the goal ahead.
In the same way, when our hearts are set on seeing the Lord, our pursuit changes. We begin to chase what matters to Him. We begin to pursue peace. We begin to pursue holiness.
And that is a far greater prize than anything the world’s race could ever offer.
