The Sacrifice of Encouragement – Hebrews 13:16

Have you ever watched one child thank another without being told?

It almost stops you in your tracks. There is something so clean about it. No prompting. No bargaining. No lecture first. Just kindness offered freely, and suddenly the whole room feels lighter. A parent sees that and smiles almost without thinking.

That little moment helps open up this verse.

Hebrews 13:16

But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

We usually think of sacrifice as something costly offered upward to God. And it is. But here Hebrews reminds us that some sacrifices move outward toward people. Doing good. Communicating. Sharing. Encouraging. Remembering to bless somebody else in practical, heartfelt ways. God says He is well pleased with that.

Here’s the thing. Encouragement can cost more than we think.

It costs time to write the note.
It costs humility to speak gratitude.
It costs intention to stop thinking only about your own burdens long enough to strengthen somebody else.
And sometimes, when your own heart is tired, even saying one sincere, life giving word can feel like a sacrifice.

But that is exactly why it matters.

A lot of people assume spiritual worship only happens in obviously sacred moments. Singing in church. Bowing in prayer. Reading the Word. And yes, those things matter deeply. But Hebrews says heaven also notices the text you send, the thank you you speak, the kindness you show, the generosity you extend, the comfort you offer to somebody who is hanging on by a thread.

Don’t miss this. God is not only pleased by grand gestures. He is pleased by ordinary goodness done in His name.

A word of encouragement may seem small to you, but to the person receiving it, it can land like bread in a famine. A note of thanks can steady somebody who has been quietly serving and wondering if anyone sees. A small act of generosity can whisper, “The Lord has not forgotten you.” That is not a minor thing. That is sacrifice with a sweet smell to heaven.

It is a little like tossing dry wood onto a fading fire. The room may be growing cold, and you may think one piece will not matter much. But then the flame catches again. Warmth comes back. Light rises. Somebody nearby breathes easier. That is what encouragement does.

So Hebrews says, forget not.

Do not forget to do good when it is inconvenient.
Do not forget to communicate when silence would be easier.
Do not forget to encourage when your flesh says, “Maybe later.”
Do not forget to thank the sister who helped you, the brother who stood by you, the saint who served quietly, the friend who prayed for you.

Because your heavenly Father sees all of that. And with such sacrifices, He is well pleased.
