James 5:9
Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.
When people are under pressure, they often start turning on each other. That is what James is warning against here. The righteous are being mistreated, life is unfair, and the temptation is to get sour, bitter, and sharp even with fellow believers. But James says, “Do not do that. Do not start carrying grudges against one another.”
Why?
Because the Judge is already at the door.
Think about that.
James is reminding us that our hope is not ultimately in movements, systems, alliances, or earthly power. Salvation is not going to arrive because people finally organize perfectly. It is not going to come because a coalition gets strong enough or because a cause gains enough momentum. The great answer is still the same: Jesus Christ is coming back.
That changes how we live right now.
If the Judge is at the door, then I do not need to spend my energy chewing on other believers. I do not need to live irritated, offended, and worked up over every slight. I do not need to make my world small and bitter. I need to keep the big picture in view. The King is near. The kingdom is coming. Christ will settle what needs settling.
I love that.
Because it pulls me out of petty thinking. It reminds me that grudges are too small for people who are waiting for Jesus. Bitterness shrinks the soul. It traps a man in the hallway while eternity is standing at the front door.
So James says, in effect, “Do not lose each other while waiting for Him. Do not start fighting among yourselves while the Lord is so near.” Live for the kingdom. Keep your eyes up. Let go of the grudge. The Judge is standing before the door.
