James 4:7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
There is a clear order in this verse. First, submit to God. Then, resist the devil. That matters because real strength does not come from trying harder. It comes from staying yielded to the Lord. When a person is submitted to God, he can stand against the enemy in a way he never could on his own.
A lot of spiritual battle does not look dramatic. It often shows up in ordinary moments. You decide to pray, and suddenly your mind is scattered. You make up your mind to worship, and everything seems to go wrong. You set out to do what is right, and resistance starts rising from every direction. Little pressures. Little distractions. Little discouragements. All of it aimed at getting you to back off.
Here’s the thing.
The enemy is not all knowing. He studies patterns. He watches for what works. If a certain kind of pressure keeps slowing you down, that pressure will keep showing up. If discouragement works, expect more discouragement. If distraction works, expect more distraction. If inconvenience works, that is the button that will keep getting pushed.
That is why this verse is so important. If we keep retreating, the enemy keeps pressing. Not because he is unstoppable, but because he thinks he is succeeding.
He is like a little dog barking behind a fence, running back and forth as though he owns the road. Why does he keep doing it? Because he thinks he is driving someone away. But the moment you stop and stand your ground, the whole scene changes. What sounded fierce suddenly looks small.
That is what James is telling us. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Not eventually wear down. Not calmly walk away. Flee.
The enemy often seems bigger when we are backing up. Fear makes him look larger than he is. But submission to God steadies the soul. Resistance means choosing not to yield the ground God told you to hold. It means continuing in prayer, continuing in worship, continuing in obedience, continuing in the Word, even when pressure says, “Give in.”
So do not let the noise fool you. The enemy is louder than he is powerful. Stay low before God, and stand firm where He has placed you. A submitted believer who resists does not have to live chased. The devil is the one who runs.
