2 Peter 1:16
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
Peter draws a line in the sand here. He says, in essence, “What we told you was not made up. We were not passing along religious fairy tales, clever myths, or spiritual speculation. We saw Him.”
That is huge.
The Christian message is not built on imagination. It is not a legend polished over time. It is not a collection of inspiring ideas for sentimental people. Peter says the apostles were eyewitnesses of the majesty of Jesus Christ. They were not selling a theory. They were reporting what they had seen.
You recall the story. Peter was there on the Mount of Transfiguration. He saw Jesus shining in glory. He saw Moses and Elijah appear. He heard the voice from heaven. This was not secondhand religion to him. This was not mythology. Peter had stood in the presence of the majesty of Christ.
That matters, because people are always looking for something spiritual. One generation runs after mythology. Another chases horoscopes. Another gets caught up in personality cults, trends, secret knowledge, or the latest fashionable theory. But Peter says, “We are not talking about fables.”
I like that plainness.
There is a world of difference between something cleverly invented and something personally witnessed. A fable may entertain for a while. A fad may sweep through for a season. A theory may sparkle for a moment. But none of those things can save a soul, steady a conscience, or conquer the grave. Only Christ can do that. And Peter says the Christ he preached was the Christ he actually saw.
Here is the thing. Christianity is rooted in reality.
Not in wishful thinking. Not in mystical fog. Not in cunningly devised stories. In Jesus Christ, who walked among men, revealed His glory, died for sin, rose again, and will come again in power.
That is why Peter writes with such certainty. He is not saying, “Here is a possibility you may want to consider.” He is saying, “We know what we are talking about because we were there.”
And that still matters for us. Our faith is not anchored in trends, personalities, or whatever happens to be popular at the moment. It is anchored in the historic Christ. The real Jesus. The glorious Son of God who stepped into time and showed His majesty.
So when the world offers you one more spiritual substitute, one more clever story, one more polished deception, do not be shaken by it. Stay with the One who is real. Stay with the testimony of Scripture. Stay with the apostles who spoke not as dreamers, but as eyewitnesses.
Saints, we are not following a myth.
We are following the majestic Christ.
