Confidence at His Coming – 1 John 2:28-29

1 John 2:28-29

And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

John brings it down to something very personal. This is not merely about spotting error, debating doctrine, or winning an argument. It is about what will happen when Jesus appears.

Abide in Him now, John says, so that when He comes, you will have confidence and not shrink back in shame.

That is a searching word.

Because the same ones who diminished the Son, blurred His glory, and tried to make Him less than He is will one day stand face to face with Him in the fullness of His deity. The One they reduced will not be reduced then. The One they explained away will not be explained away then. The One they made smaller in their teaching will appear in majesty exactly as He is.

And in that moment, shame will flood every false idea.

Think about that.

There are people who talk about Jesus easily now because they have fashioned Him into something manageable. They speak of Him as teacher, helper, prophet, or created being. But John says, in effect, “Abide in the real Christ now, because the real Christ is the One who is coming.” And when He comes, every lie told about Him will be exposed by His presence alone.

That is why abiding matters.

To abide in Him is to stay close to Him as He truly is. It is to remain in the truth about His Person, to walk with Him, trust Him, love Him, and let your life be shaped by Him. Then His coming will not be a terror to you. It will be a joy. You will not pull back in embarrassment. You will lift up your head with confidence.

I like that.

John then says that if you know He is righteous, you also know that everyone who does righteousness is born of Him. In other words, right doctrine and right living belong together. The Christ who is truly righteous produces righteousness in the people who truly belong to Him.

An apple tree produces apples. It does not strain to prove itself alive. It simply bears what matches its nature. So too the one born of God begins, however imperfectly and falteringly, to show the family likeness. There is a hunger for what is right. There is a desire to please the Lord. There is a new direction in the life.

Not perfection.

But direction.

So little children, abide in Him. Stay near the true Christ. Hold to His deity. Walk in His righteousness. Because the day is coming when faith will become sight, and those who know Him as He is will not be ashamed when they stand before Him.

They will be glad.
