What Lasts Forever – 1 John 2:17

1 John 2:17

And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

John has a way of cutting through the fog. After speaking of the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, he now tells us the simple truth about all of it. It is passing away. The whole system that dazzles men, seduces hearts, inflates egos, and stirs appetites is already fading.

That changes the way a wise person looks at things.

The world shouts as though it is permanent. It markets itself as though this is what matters most. It tells you to chase the thrill, buy the image, feed the craving, build the name, protect the ego, and gather the applause. But John says all of that is already on its way out. It has expiration stamped all over it.

Think about a parade float. From a distance it looks bright, massive, and impressive. Music is playing. Lights are flashing. Crowds are staring. But when the parade is over, the float rolls away, the confetti gets swept up, and the street is empty again. That is the world system. Loud for a moment. Gone the next.

Do not miss this. John is not merely saying the world is disappointing. He is saying it is temporary. The lust of the flesh passes. The lust of the eyes passes. The pride of life passes. Even while men are giving themselves to those things, those things are already slipping through their fingers.

But then comes the contrast.

He that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

I like that. Because John is not calling us merely to say no to something. He is calling us to invest in what lasts. The man who does the will of God is not building his life on vapor. He is stepping into something eternal. He is putting his feet on ground that does not move.

That does not mean the will of God always looks flashy. Usually it does not. Sometimes it looks like quiet obedience. Quiet purity. Quiet humility. Quiet faithfulness in the home, at work, in prayer, in suffering, in the unseen choices nobody applauds. The world may not notice much of that. But heaven does. And John says that kind of life abides forever.

There is such comfort in that.

Because sometimes doing the will of God can feel small compared with the noise of the world. A Christian woman quietly walking with the Lord may not look impressive next to the glitter and speed of the age. A man saying no to appetite, no to vanity, no to pride may seem to be missing out. But John says he is not missing out at all. He is laying hold of what remains when everything else is gone.

The world passes.

Its shine passes.
Its cravings pass.
Its applause passes.
Its image passes.

But the will of God does not pass.

Beloved, this verse helps us sort out what deserves our affection. Do not build your life around what cannot stay. Do not hand your heart to what time itself is already carrying off. Set your life in the will of God. Walk there. Stay there. Because when the dust settles and the parade is over, the one who has done the will of God will still be standing.
