Marked for the City of God – Revelation 3:12

Revelation 3:12

Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

What a promise this is. Jesus is saying, in effect, Hold fast, keep looking for Me, and one day I will plant you firmly in My kingdom. “Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out.” That speaks of permanence. That speaks of stability. That speaks of finally being settled forever in the presence of God.

I like that because so much of life here feels temporary. Things shift. People move. dreams fade. Strength comes and goes. Even the best moments down here do not stay. But Jesus says there is coming a day when His people will be fixed forever in His presence, never again unstable, never again uprooted, never again forced outside. A pillar stands. A pillar stays. And so will we.

Then He says, “And I will write upon him the name of my God.” That is precious. It speaks of belonging. It speaks of identity. It speaks of being openly and eternally marked as His. The names this world puts on us will not matter then. The labels people handed us will be gone. The failures that tried to define us will be gone. The confusion, the shame, the struggle, all of it will give way to one glorious reality. We belong to Him.

His name will be upon us.

Then Jesus says, “And the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God.” So not only will we bear the name of God, but we will belong to the city of God. The New Jerusalem will make every city on earth look small and passing. Men boast in cities now. They build them, expand them, admire them, and identify with them. But the city that is coming down from God will outshine them all. And we will not be outsiders there. We will be citizens. We will be home.

Think about that. We spend much of this life feeling like pilgrims, and that is exactly what we are. We never quite fit here because we were made for another country. And one day the Lord will write the name of that city upon us and say, This is where you belong.

Then comes the final phrase. “And I will write upon him my new name.” That opens up something wonderful. Proverbs 25:2 says, “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.” And Revelation 1:6 says we are made kings and priests unto God. So it is as if the Lord is saying, There are dimensions of who I am that you have not even begun to understand. There are glories in My nature, depths in My character, beauties in My person that will take all eternity for you to discover.

That is what makes heaven so thrilling to think about. It will not be dull. It will not be flat. It will not be some static existence where nothing deepens and nothing grows. It will be the endless unveiling of Jesus Christ. It will be joy upon joy, wonder upon wonder, glory upon glory, as we keep discovering more of who He is.

And unlike every earthly relationship, this one will never disappoint. Down here, time exposes weakness. Time reveals flaws. Time shows us the limits of one another. But not so with the Lord. With Him, the longer we know Him, the more beautiful He will be. The deeper we go, the sweeter it will become. The more we see, the more we will love. Eternity will not lessen delight. It will increase it.

So this verse is full of comfort. The overcomer will be firmly planted. The overcomer will bear the name of God. The overcomer will belong to the New Jerusalem. And the overcomer will spend eternity discovering more and more of Jesus Christ.

Beloved, that is where we are headed. Not toward emptiness. Not toward some vague religious future. We are headed toward permanence, belonging, glory, and the unending joy of knowing Him.
