Open Doors and Broken Walls – Revelation 9:21

Revelation 9:21

Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

This is one of the saddest verses in the chapter. After all the plagues, all the terror, all the warnings, men still would not repent. That is how hard the heart can become when sin is cherished instead of confessed.

And look at what John lists: murders, sorceries, fornication, and thefts. These are not just bad habits. These are doorways. These are ways people give darkness room to work.

They would not repent of their murders. We live in a time when life is treated cheaply, and things that ought to make a nation tremble are now debated as though they were ordinary policy questions. That alone tells you how numb people can become.

Then comes sorceries. The word points to drugs. And that helps explain something people do not always want to hear. Drug use is not merely a physical issue or a mental issue. It is a spiritual issue too. The world says it only alters the brain. Scripture shows it opens access points deeper than that. It reaches into the soul.

Then John speaks of fornication. Pornography, adultery, sexual sin, none of it is harmless. People say, “I’m not hurting anybody.” But that is not true. Sin always hooks deeper than people think. It stains the soul. It clouds judgment. It gives the enemy room to oppress.

And then thefts. Even little dishonesties we excuse can become openings. We laugh things off and say everybody does it. But small compromises are not small when they keep giving darkness permission to press in.

Now let me say this clearly. A believer cannot be demon possessed. Scripture is plain enough about that. Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world. But while believers cannot be possessed, they certainly can be oppressed. And when a Christian keeps opening doors through compromise, the soul begins to feel hammered.

That is why Nehemiah comes to mind. Ezra rebuilt the temple, but the walls were still broken down. The temple speaks of the spirit. The land can picture the body. But the walls picture the soul, the place where choices are made. And that is where many believers struggle. They know they are saved. They know the Lord is theirs. But the walls of the soul are in ruins, and the enemy keeps harassing them.

Then comes Nehemiah, the comforter, a beautiful picture of the Holy Spirit. He surveys the ruin, then begins to speak. And the people have a choice. They can ignore the voice of the comforter, or they can listen and rebuild.

Thank God they listened.

They had a mind to work. It was not easy. There was pressure from inside and attack from outside. But they kept building, and the wall stood again.

That is the word here. Maybe the Holy Spirit is saying, “You are being stung badly because you have left doors open.” Not to shame you. To restore you. If you listen to His voice, He will rebuild the broken places in your soul.

Beloved, sin always tears down. But the Spirit of God still rebuilds. Listen to Him. Repent where you need to repent. And let Him restore the walls.
