Revelation 9:2
And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
When the bottomless pit is opened, this is no small disturbance. This is the release of horrors so dreadful that every human comparison feels weak. If every prison in the nation were opened at once and every inmate turned loose, it would be child’s play next to what will happen when these demons are released. That is how dark this scene is.
Then John says smoke rises out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air are darkened by it. The picture is heavy, choking, blinding. It is not only that demons are released. It is that their release fills the world with darkness.
Think about old London, wrapped in smoke from cannons and fires burning day and night. The learned men of that age said fresh air was the problem behind the plague. They were wrong. The real cause was something they could not see and would not understand. And the one who knew the truth would have been mocked for saying so.
That sounds strangely familiar.
People today still laugh at the idea of demons. They say demons are only labels for fears, phobias, or emotional imbalance. But the Bible does not speak that way. The Bible says demons are real. Paul says plainly in Ephesians 6:12 that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, and spiritual wickedness in high places.
Do not miss that. Sometimes what men call progress is only smoke. Sometimes what sounds enlightened is just blindness with a polished voice. They were blowing smoke then, and they are blowing smoke now. The world denies demons not because demons are unreal, but because men do not want to face how real the spiritual battle actually is.
And that is why Revelation 9 is so sobering. The pit is opened, the smoke rises, and the darkness grows. The hidden world pushes into the visible one. What men mocked becomes impossible to ignore.
Beloved, there is a battle raging beyond what human eyes can fully see. Do not be naïve. Do not let the world explain away what the Word of God declares plainly. Demons are real. Darkness is real. Spiritual warfare is real.
But so is the authority of God.
Even the pit is opened only when permission is given. Even hellish powers move only within the limits heaven allows. That means our hope is not in human wisdom, but in the Lord who reigns over every realm, seen and unseen.
