Revelation 10:4
And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.
This is a fascinating moment. The seven thunders speak. John hears what they say. He is ready to write it down. And then heaven stops him.
Seal it up.
Do not write it.
What did the seven thunders utter?
We do not know.
And that is exactly the point.
The Book of Revelation is given to reveal, yet right here in the middle of the revealing, God chooses to conceal. He lets John hear something he is not allowed to share. That means there are some things the Lord has decided we are simply not going to know, at least not yet.
That can bother us, because we like answers. We want to solve every mystery, untangle every difficulty, and explain every silence. But the Lord is reminding us here that faith does not rest on knowing everything. Faith rests on trusting Him when we do not.
I think that is a needed word. Not knowing keeps us humble. When I think I have every answer, I start becoming self sufficient. I begin leaning on my own understanding. But when the Lord leaves some matters sealed, I am brought back to the simple place of saying, “Lord, I do not get this. So I will trust You.”
That is not weakness. That is maturity.
Not knowing also keeps us useful. Sometimes we want the mysteries of the universe when God has only asked us to be faithful with the peanut in our hand. We want to master everything while He is calling us to focus on the one thing He has actually given us to do. A sealed word can save us from wandering into speculation and bring us back to obedience.
And not knowing keeps us stable. So much of our turmoil comes from demanding explanations. Why did this happen? Why did that door close? Why did that prayer seem unanswered? But the Lord has never promised we would understand everything. He has promised peace. He has promised presence. He has promised Himself.
That is enough.
John heard the thunders, but he was told not to write them. In other words, even an apostle had to live with some unanswered things. Even John had to leave part of the mystery in God’s hands.
So do we.
Beloved, there is a real freedom in that. You do not have to decode everything. You do not have to solve every problem. You do not have to know what the seven thunders said in order to walk with God today. Some things are sealed, not to tease you, but to teach you to trust.
And when you come to that place, the pressure starts lifting. I may not know what. I may not know how. I may not know why. But I know Who.
