The Same Devil Everywhere – Revelation 9:11

Revelation 9:11

And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

John now tells us these horrors are not random. They have a king over them. Behind the torment, behind the darkness, behind the destruction, there is a ruler, and his name in both Hebrew and Greek means the same thing.

Destroyer.

I think that is striking. No matter the language, no matter the culture, no matter the nation or generation, the devil always does the same thing. He destroys. He may change the wrapping. He may shift the method. He may wear different masks in different ages. But his work never changes.

He destroys purity.
He destroys peace.
He destroys homes.
He destroys minds.
He destroys joy.
He destroys people.

He is an equal opportunity destroyer.

He does not care what language you speak. He does not care what country you live in. He does not care whether you are rich or poor, educated or simple, religious or rebellious. His aim is always ruin. That is why his names fit him so perfectly. Abaddon. Apollyon. Destroyer.

And that helps us see the world more clearly. So much of what the enemy offers comes dressed up as freedom, pleasure, empowerment, or enlightenment. But the end is always the same. Brokenness. Bondage. Waste. Death. Jesus said in John 10:10 that the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Here in Revelation 9, we see that truth in one terrible word.

Destroyer.

Do not miss the contrast. The devil destroys everyone he can. Jesus saves everyone who comes to Him. The enemy tears down. The Lord restores. The enemy leaves people empty, bitter, and ruined. The Lord takes what has been eaten away and restores the years.

That is why this verse is more than a title. It is a revelation of Satan’s nature. He does not play fair. He does not stop halfway. He does not wound in order to heal. He destroys because destruction is who he is.

Saints, be wise. The enemy has many voices, but only one agenda. Wherever he moves, destruction follows. But wherever Christ is received, life begins.
