Two Cities – Revelation 17:5

Revelation 17:5

And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

The Bible could almost be called the story of two cities.

One is Jerusalem, the city of God.
The other is Babylon, the city of rebellion.

Those two cities keep showing up all through Scripture because they represent two completely different ways of living. Jerusalem speaks of the place where God is worshiped, where His name dwells, where His rule is welcomed. Babylon speaks of man organizing life apart from God, exalting himself, trusting his own wisdom, and building a world in defiance of heaven.

That is why this name matters so much.

John sees written on her forehead, Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth. In other words, this is bigger than one ancient city only. This is the whole system, the whole spirit, the whole rebellion that began long ago and has been spreading ever since. Babylon is not just bricks and streets. Babylon is man saying, “We will do this without God.”

It started on the plain of Shinar near the Euphrates under Nimrod, centered around Babel, where men joined together in proud rebellion. There they built their tower, reached for the heavens on their own terms, and filled their minds with the lie that man could guide himself just fine without the Lord. That spirit never died. It only spread.

And here in Revelation, John sees its final form.

Notice she is called the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth. That means Babylon is not merely corrupt in herself. She gives birth to corruption. She reproduces it. She multiplies it. False religion, idolatry, spiritual adultery, and every kind of abomination keep tracing back to this same mother spirit of rebellion against God.

That is sobering, because it reminds us that rebellion is never sterile. It always produces offspring. One compromise leads to another. One false worship system gives birth to more deception. One proud refusal to bow before God becomes the seedbed for countless other corruptions.

So really, all through history, men are choosing between these two cities.

Will I belong to Jerusalem, where God is King?
Or will I belong to Babylon, where man enthrones himself?

That is the issue.

Babylon may look impressive for a while. It may be ancient, influential, cultured, wealthy, and intellectually confident. But at its core it is still the same old lie from the garden and the tower. You do not need God. Exalt yourself. Make your own way. Build your own name.

Jerusalem says the opposite. Bow low. Worship the Lord. Wait on Him. Let Him be God.

And that is why Babylon must fall. It is not just another city among cities. It is rebellion systematized. It is pride organized. It is sin beautified and institutionalized. And God will not let it stand forever.

So the question is not merely whether you can identify Babylon prophetically. The deeper question is whether there is any Babylon spirit still alive in you. Any place where you are still saying, “I will run this myself. I will build this my way. I do not need the Lord here.”

Beloved, come out of Babylon in your heart before Babylon falls in history. Choose the city of God over the city of rebellion. Because in the end, only one city will stand.
