Revelation 22:16
I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
This is a beautiful way for Revelation to keep our eyes on who Jesus really is. He is not merely a teacher finishing a message. He is not merely a figure in prophecy. He is the center of it all. He says plainly, “I Jesus.” The One speaking is personal, living, present, and known.
Then He gives this remarkable phrase: “I am the root and the offspring of David.” In one sentence, Jesus declares both His humanity and His deity. As the babe of Bethlehem, He was the offspring of David. He came through David’s line, just as the prophets said He would. He entered history. He took on flesh. He was born into a real family, in a real town, among real people.
But He is also the root of David. That means David did not ultimately give life to Jesus. Jesus gave life to David. David came from Him before Jesus ever came from David. That is the wonder of the incarnation. The child in the manger was older than His mother. The Son born into time was the eternal Christ who stood outside time altogether.
That is why Jesus is never small, even when He is seen in humble places. In Bethlehem He is still eternal. In Nazareth He is still divine. On the cross He is still the root of David. Men may see weakness. Heaven sees majesty.
And then He adds, “the bright and morning star.” The morning star appears just before the dawn. It shines while the world is still dark, telling you night will not last much longer. That is who Jesus is for His people. He comes to us while it is still dark. He comes while tears are still falling, while questions are still lingering, while the world is still twisted and tired. And He says, in effect, Morning is coming.
I love that because Jesus is not only the fulfillment of ancient promise, He is the hope of present need. He is behind all history as its root, within all history as its Savior, and ahead of all history as its morning star. He is before it all, within it all, and waiting at the end of it all.
So when your world feels dim, do not just study prophecy as a chart. Look for the Person. The root of David is holding history together. The offspring of David understands our humanity. The bright and morning star is telling us that the long night will break.
