Revelation 22:18
For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book.
That is a serious warning. John is bringing the book to a close, and the Lord speaks with unmistakable force. Do not add to this prophecy. Do not improve it. Do not edit it to make it more acceptable. Do not decorate it with your own inventions.
Why such a strong warning? Because when men add to the Word, they always distort the heart of God. They may claim to be helping. They may say they are clarifying. But before long, man made ideas begin to crowd out what God actually said. And once that happens, people are no longer responding to revelation. They are responding to religion, speculation, or control.
So the Lord settles it. Leave the Book alone.
And John does not speak in small terms. He says that if a man adds to these things, God shall add to him the plagues written in this book. That ought to make a person step back and think carefully. If someone is tempted to add to Revelation, he would do well to remember what those plagues include in chapters 6 through 19. Seals opened. Trumpets sounding. Bowls poured out. Famine. Fire. Darkness. Demonic torment. Bloodshed on a scale the world has never seen. This is not the book to tamper with casually.
What is striking is that the warning itself shows us how precious the Word is. Scripture is not clay for us to reshape. It is truth delivered to us. Our place is not above it, but under it. We are not the editors. We are the hearers.
That applies not only to cults and false prophets, but to all of us. We add to the Book whenever we pile human demands on top of what God has said. We add to it when we make our opinions sound equal to Scripture. We add to it when we twist a plain text so it will fit our system. It is easy to point at someone else. This verse tells all of us to handle the Word with trembling care.
And there is something else here that matters. God does not need our additions to make His Word stronger. The gospel is already strong enough. Prophecy is already clear enough to accomplish what God intended. The Book of Revelation does not need to be sweetened, softened, or sensationalized. It needs to be received.
So the right response is humility. Open the Book. Read it. Teach it honestly. Believe it. Obey it. But do not tamper with it. A faithful servant does not improve the message from the King. He delivers it as it was given.
Revelation closes with majesty, mercy, invitation, and warning. This warning reminds us that the Word of God is not a toy for clever men. It is holy truth. And holy truth is to be handled with clean hands and a bowed heart.
