Never Closed, Never Dark – Revelation 21:23-25

Revelation 21:23, 24, 25
And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it:
And the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.

John keeps giving us details that are almost too wonderful to take in. Here he says the city has no need of the sun or the moon. That does not mean the sun and moon were unimpressive before. In the kingdom age, Isaiah 30:26 says the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold. That will be dazzling beyond anything the world has ever seen. But even that brightness gives way to something greater.

In the New Jerusalem, the city does not need created light because the glory of God lights it, and the Lamb is its light.

That is stunning.

Everything we know in this present world depends on borrowed light. Morning comes because the sun rises. Night is softened because the moon reflects what it receives. But in that city, there is no borrowed light at all. The light comes from the Lord Himself. It is direct. It is full. It is constant. The One who said, “Let there be light,” will be the light.

And that tells us something about heaven right away. Heaven is not bright merely because it is beautiful. Heaven is bright because Jesus is there in unveiled glory. The Lamb who was despised, rejected, scourged, and crucified will be the light of that city. The One the world treated as nothing will be everything there.

John says the nations of those who are saved will walk in that light. They will not stumble. They will not wander. They will not wonder what is true and what is false, what is hidden and what is real. Down here, we are forever dealing with shadows. We misread people. We misjudge circumstances. We struggle to know what is really going on. But in that city, there will be no shadowland. Everything will be clear in the light of the Lamb.

Then John adds another beautiful detail. The kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. In other words, whatever is truly honorable, whatever has real worth, whatever reflects the goodness of God, it all finds its right place there. Earthly glory has a way of turning rotten in this world. Power corrupts. Recognition inflates. Wealth distorts. But in that city, all glory is finally laid down in the right place. Everything good comes home to God.

And then comes that line I love so much. The gates of it shall not be shut at all by day, for there shall be no night there.

No night.

No darkness.
No danger.
No fear.
No need to lock anything.
No need to guard against anything creeping in after sunset.
No anxious checking of the door.
No wondering what might happen in the dark.

The gates never close because nothing evil will ever enter. Nothing threatening will ever approach. Nothing unclean will ever rise again. The city is perfectly safe because the curse is gone and the Lord reigns there openly.

That reminds me of how different earth is. Even our happiest places close. Even our best moments end. Even the places that promise magic eventually shut the gates, turn off the lights, and send you home disappointed. This world cannot keep anything open for long. The day ends. The music stops. The crowd leaves. The gates swing shut.

But not there.

The true kingdom never closes.

You will never arrive one minute too late. You will never find the lights out. You will never hear that access has ended for the evening. You will never be told the moment is over. The gates remain open because the joy remains open. The welcome remains open. The presence of God remains open.

That is what the heart of every believer longs for, whether he knows how to say it or not. A place where the light never fades. A place where beauty never closes. A place where security never weakens. A place where Jesus Himself fills everything with glory.

John is not merely describing a future city. He is showing us the world as it was always meant to be. No darkness. No shutting out. No ending. Just the glory of God, the light of the Lamb, and open gates forever.
