A Dedicated Life in a Dying World – Genesis 5:18-20

Genesis 5:18, 19, 20

And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch:

And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.

Now the line comes to Enoch.

His name means dedicated.

That stands out right away, because Genesis 5 keeps moving through the same rhythm. A man is born. He lives. He has sons and daughters. And he dies. Over and over again, that is the toll of the chapter. But right here, before we even get to Enoch’s story in full, his name already gives us a little light in the middle of all that death.

Dedicated.

What a needed word that is.

Because it reminds us that even in a world where death reigns, a man can still belong wholly to God. Even in a fallen world, even in a sorrowful world, even in a world where every life seems to end with the same three words, and he died, there can still be a life marked by dedication to the Lord.

That is encouraging.

A lot of people assume that because the world is dark, devotion must be weak. Because the culture is corrupt, dedication must be rare. Because death is everywhere, holiness must be impossible. But Enoch’s very name pushes back on that. It tells us that God still has people set apart for Himself.

Dedicated people.

Not perfect people.

Not famous people.

Dedicated people.

That is what the Lord has always wanted. Men and women whose hearts are turned toward Him. Men and women who belong to Him in the middle of a crooked generation. Men and women who are not just interested in God from a distance, but given over to Him.

That is really the question, is it not?

Not whether we know religious language.

Not whether we can talk about truth.

Not whether we can point out what is wrong with the culture around us.

But whether we are dedicated.

Whether our hearts are really His.

Whether our lives are truly set apart unto Him.

Jared begat Enoch. One comes down, and then comes dedication. That fits beautifully. Because when God draws near, the right response is always consecration. When the Lord moves toward a man, the man who sees it rightly says, Then I want to be Yours. Fully Yours. Not halfway. Not casually. Yours.

That is still the call on our lives.

The Lord has come down to us in Jesus Christ. Grace has appeared. Mercy has drawn near. The Son of God stepped into our world, took on flesh, went to the Cross, and rose again. So what should the response be? Dedication. A life laid before Him. A heart yielded to Him. A walk that says, I am not my own. I belong to the One who saved me.

Beloved, in a dying world, live a dedicated life.

Do not drift with the age.

Do not let the spirit of the world name you.

Do not settle for being casually religious.

Be His.

Fully His.

It is a beautiful thing when a life is marked not merely by years, labor, family, or accomplishment, but by this one steady reality: dedicated to the Lord.

And as Enoch’s story goes on, we are going to see just how powerful that kind of life can be.
