One Window, One Door, One Journey – Genesis 6:16

Genesis 6:16

A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

This verse is rich.

First, there was a window in the ark. Noah had no control over the door, as we will see, but he did have control over the window. That speaks to me, because in life there are a lot of things I cannot control, but I do have some say over whether I live in light or in darkness. I control how much illumination and understanding I walk in by how much I allow the Word of God into my thinking.

Psalm 119:105 says,

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

That is still true. I can stay in the dark if I want to. I can fill my mind with noise, distraction, and lesser things. Or I can open the window of the Word and let light flood in. Sure, sometimes it would be easier to watch something mindless. Sometimes it would be easier to sleep in. Sometimes it would be easier not to take the time to read, study, meditate, and pray. But I will walk in light only to the extent that I choose to open that window and let the Word of God renew my mind.

That is what we are doing right now.

We are opening the window.

Then there was the door of the ark.

Not doors.

Door.

One.

No back door. No side option. No emergency exit. Just one way in. And that is exactly why people still push back against the gospel. They say, Why can you not just be broad minded? Why can you not say there are many ways to God? The answer is simple. Because Jesus did not say that. He said in John 14:6,

I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

That is wonderfully plain.

And I am glad it is plain. If God had given five ways into salvation, Satan would have come back with twenty five counterfeits. If God had given ten, confusion would have multiplied even more. But God, in His mercy, kept it simple. He did not want men guessing about which door to use. So He gave one. Christ is that door. Not one of many. The door.

That is not narrow cruelty.

That is merciful clarity.

Then the ark had three levels. Lower, second, and third stories. That makes me think of what John says in 1 John 2:13 and 14. In the family of God there are little children, young men, and fathers. There are those just beginning who know the Father. There are those growing stronger, overcoming the wicked one, and in whom the Word of God abides. And there are those who have a deep, seasoned, quiet walk with God because they have known Him from the beginning.

That is the Christian family.

Different stages.

Different levels of maturity.

But all on the same ark.

I like that.

Not everybody aboard is at the same place in growth, but all aboard are headed toward heaven. Some are just starting out. Some are learning how to fight and stand. Some have walked with the Lord a long time and carry a deeper strength. But all belong to Him. All are safe in Christ. All are moving in the same direction.

That ought to help us.

It ought to make us patient with younger believers.

It ought to stir younger believers to keep growing.

And it ought to remind us all that maturity matters, but being in the ark matters first.

So here again the ark is preaching.

Open the window and let the light in.

Come through the one door God has provided.

And keep growing as you travel with the people of God.

Beloved, the Lord has made this wonderfully clear. He has given us light for the journey, one way into salvation, and room to grow once we are inside. He has not left us guessing in the dark. He has not left us to invent our own way. He has brought us in through Christ, and He means to grow us as we go.
