Sheltered by Atonement – Genesis 6:14

Genesis 6:14

Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

This verse is doing far more than giving Noah carpentry instructions. It is quietly telling the story of salvation.

The ark was to be made of gopher wood. I do not think that detail is accidental. Because of its density and strength, I believe it was the kind of wood used for coffins. That fits, because salvation begins with death. Jesus said in Matthew 16:24 that if any man would come after Him, he must deny himself and take up his cross. That is where it starts. Not with me becoming a slightly better version of myself. Not with me adding a little religion to my life. It begins when I come to the end of myself and say, I am done insisting on my own way. I yield to You.

That is the beginning of life.

Then the Lord tells Noah to make rooms in the ark. The word there is literally nests. I like that because it softens the picture. Not just sections or compartments, but places to settle down. Places to belong. Places to rest.

And that says something beautiful about the kingdom of God.

There is room in the ark.

There is room for believers who do not see every secondary issue exactly the same way I do. There is room for brothers and sisters who love Jesus, trust His Word, and belong to Him, even if they do not line up with me on every point. That does not mean truth is unimportant. It is very important. But it does mean humility is important too. Paul says in Philippians 2:12 to work out your own salvation, and in 1 Corinthians 13:12 he reminds us that here and now we see through a glass darkly. None of us sees as perfectly as we imagine. That ought to make us a little more patient, a little more gracious, a little less eager to crowd everyone else out. The ark had room. So does the kingdom.

Then comes that wonderful phrase. Noah was to pitch the ark within and without with pitch. This is one of those places where the language opens up and the beauty of the text shines through. This is the only place in the Old Testament where the Hebrew word kapher is translated pitch. Everywhere else it is translated atonement.

That is no small thing.

The ark was covered with atonement.

Inside and outside, all around, it was sealed by what speaks of atonement.

That is the picture for us. What kept the waters of judgment from breaking in on Noah was the covering. And what keeps the judgment our sin deserves from breaking in on us is the atonement of Jesus Christ. He has made us at one with the Father through His death on the Cross. That is our shelter. That is our safety. That is our hope.

So in this one verse, the Lord gives us a beautiful picture of salvation. Death to self. Room in the family. Atonement all around.

That is the gospel.

Beloved, do not miss how simple and how rich this is. The Lord has not left us to face the flood by our own strength. He has given us a cross where self dies, a kingdom wide enough for all His people, and an atonement strong enough to hold against every wave.
