A Father So Patient – Genesis 15:4

Genesis 15:4
And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

I love the patience of God here.

The Lord had said to Abram, “I am thy reward.” Abram answered, “But what wilt Thou give me?” And the Lord did not rebuke him, turn from him, or leave him in the dark. Instead, He spoke again.

“This shall not be thine heir.”

Then He made it even plainer. The heir would not be Eliezer. The promise would not be fulfilled through some substitute. Abram would have a son of his own.

That just amazes me. The largeness of our Father’s heart is hard to take in. He is so patient with Abram. And He is so patient with me too.

Abram was still asking questions.
Still struggling.
Still stuck on what he did not have.

And the Lord kept talking.

That is such a comfort, because I can be the same way. The Lord speaks so clearly, and I still come back with my fears, my questions, my little calculations. Yet He does not cast me off. He does not say, I already told you once. He comes near again and speaks again.

That is the heart of our Father.

He knows how slow we can be.
He knows how easily we drift into worry.
He knows how often we need Him to repeat His promise.

And still He stays with us.

Abram says, in effect, What will You give me?
The Lord says, I will give you a son.

Not because Abram had earned it by his faithfulness.
Not because Abram had responded perfectly.
But because God is gracious, and God is kind, and God loves to deal patiently with His children.

Saints, that should steady our hearts. The Lord is not irritated by our weakness nearly as quickly as we imagine. He is not looking for a reason to walk away. He is a Father. And the bigness of His heart shows up in the way He keeps speaking, keeps assuring, keeps drawing us on.
