Fatness in Communion – Genesis 13:18

Genesis 13:18

Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the Lord.

Abram keeps moving in the right direction.

Lot set his eyes toward Sodom. Abram moved toward Mamre and Hebron. Lot chose what looked rich. Abram chose what was rich. That is the difference. One man was drawn by appearance. The other man was drawn by communion.

Mamre means fatness.
Hebron means communion.

So in type Abram is saying, I am not interested in the people, pleasures, prosperity, politics, or perversity of Sodom. I am going to the place of fatness and communion. I am going to the place where the soul gets fed. I am going to the place where there is richness, satisfaction, and fullness because the Lord is there.

That is where real fatness is found.

Not in Sodom.
Not in the world.
Not in what dazzles the eye for a moment.

In communion.

That is such a needed word because the world is always promising fullness. It says, Come over here. This is where life is. This is where the excitement is. This is where the payoff is. But the world never really satisfies. It can stimulate. It can distract. It can entertain. It can intoxicate. But it cannot feed the soul. It cannot give fatness to the inner man.

Abram knew better.

He had been to Egypt. He had learned what compromise feels like. He had watched Lot angle toward Sodom. And now, instead of drifting in that same direction, he moves toward Hebron. Toward communion. Toward the place where fellowship with God is the great treasure.

And what does he do there?

He builds an altar unto the Lord.

Of course he does. Abram always ends up back at the altar. That is the mark of the man. Wherever he settles rightly, worship rises. Wherever his heart gets straight, an altar appears. He is not content just to have land. He wants the Lord. He is not content just to be separate from Sodom. He wants communion with God.

That is the real issue.

It is not enough merely to say, I do not want Sodom. The deeper question is, Do I want Hebron? Do I want communion? Do I want the richness that comes from walking with the Lord? Because if I do not cultivate communion, the world will keep pulling at me with its cheap substitutes.

Abram shows us the better way.

Leave Sodom to Lot.
Leave the glitter to the world.
Leave the noise, the perversity, the self promotion, and all the rest of it behind.

Go to Hebron.
Go to communion.
Go to the altar.

That is where the soul gets full.
