Genesis 10:15-17
And Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn, and Heth, And the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite, And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,
Now the line of Canaan begins to unfold, and it is a line that will matter greatly as the biblical story moves forward. These names are not just family markers. They become the roots of peoples and cultures that will show up again and again in Scripture.
Sidon points toward the Phoenician world. Heth becomes the father of the Hittites. The Jebusites would inhabit Jerusalem before David took the city. The Amorites, Girgasites, and Hivites all become familiar names in the Old Testament as peoples occupying the land that Israel would later enter.
And then there is the Sinite. Sino refers to China, so the Chinese, Japanese, and Asian peoples are understood here as descendants of Ham. Once again, Genesis is showing how the nations spread outward from these original family lines after the flood.
That is what makes this chapter so important. It is not just a genealogy. It is the early table of nations. It is the beginning of peoples, regions, and civilizations that would shape the course of world history.
Beloved, even in these names, the message is the same. The nations did not appear randomly. God saw their beginnings from the start.
