Bringing It Home – Genesis 18:16-19

Genesis 18:16-19

And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way. And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

This is one of those passages that quietly says a lot.

The Lord is about to reveal what He is going to do, and He says, in essence, “I am not going to keep this from Abraham.” Why not? Because Abraham is the kind of man who will take what God shows him and carry it straight into his home. The Lord says, “I know him.” That is a beautiful statement. God knew Abraham would not treat truth like a private treasure. He would hand it down to his children and to his household.

That gets my attention.

We tend to think revelation comes to the person with the best notes, the strongest study habits, or the most organized thoughts. But here the emphasis is different. God ties what He is about to show Abraham to the fact that Abraham will teach his family. He will speak of the way of the Lord. He will lead his house. He will pass along what matters.

That tells me something important. The Lord is not merely looking for people who enjoy hearing truth. He is looking for people who will bring truth home.

And that is ministry.

A lot of people think ministry is something that happens only in a church building, behind a pulpit, or in front of a class. But if you have children, grandchildren, or people in your care, you already have a ministry. You may never preach a sermon to a crowd, but when you gather your family, open the Bible, pray with them, sing with them, and talk about the Lord, you are doing real ministry.

In many ways, that is the deepest kind.

Because it is one thing to speak to a room. It is another thing to build a home where the Lord is known. It is one thing to share truth publicly. It is another thing to sit with your family in an ordinary moment and make the Word part of the atmosphere of the house. That work may look small to some people, but heaven does not see it that way.

God says of Abraham, “I know him.”

I would love for that to be said of me in that sense. “I know him. I know where truth will go if I give it to him. I know he will not leave it in a notebook. I know he will not just admire it. He will share it. He will live it. He will bring it to the people nearest to him.”

That is what I want.

Not just more information.
Not just more material.
Not just more things to file away.

I want the kind of heart that takes what God says and turns it into family worship, family prayer, family conversation, family direction. Because truth was never meant only to be collected. It was meant to be lived and passed on.

And I have found that some of the sweetest things the Lord gives do not come in the big moments. They come in the simple ones. Around the house. In conversation. During prayer. While sharing Scripture with the people God has placed close to you. There is something precious about that. The Lord meets us there.

Abraham was trusted with insight because he was faithful in the most important ministry he had. He would teach his household.

Saints, if God has given you a family, He has given you a ministry. And when you take His Word seriously there, you are not missing ministry. You are standing right in the middle of it.
